Paris, France

Weekend of February 15th-17th:

This past weekend I spent Friday and Saturday exploring Paris! I met up with a friend from home and her two roommates. We visited many beautiful places. We started at at the museum, "Musee D'orsay" then headed over to visit Notre Dame and along the way there we passed an artist street that was filled with artwork created by locals everywhere, then walked around the Louvre, and eventually made it to the Eiffel Tower. Although I am terrified of heights I made it to the tippity top of this landmark. I remember hearing my mom talk about visiting france and the eiffel tower and being too scared to go up it, and how much she regretted it.. her little voice in my head definitely helped to persuade me into my decision!

Today was our first big planned excursion with the entire school. We visited a dairy farm and a cheese farm. The first farm that we visited had lots of animals, like cows, pigs, horses, chickens, ducks, and rabbits. Their main money maker are the cows. The artificially inseminate each female cow to create a certain type of product. Some cows are used for milk, some are used for cheese, yogurt, and when there is a male born they are sold away to become meat. I found out that this farm is the main source of dairy for the city of Rome. This farm amazed me with all of its sustainable practices. They had already built in solar panels on the barn, they grow their own feed for the animals, they use the female cows for milk, and the male cows for meat. The Second farm that we visited was a cheese farm. This is where the magic happens. I got to learn how the process of making cheese is created. There were so many little steps that I never had thought about before. Although not everything went as planned. We were supposed to have a "light lunch", including the cheese we made, and wine and bread that the farm also sold, but after finding out the main reason cheese stays together.... I couldn't eat any of the cheese. I was told that the rennit that they use (mostly in Italy, because its fresher) is made from the lining of a pig's stomach. In order to obtain this piece of the process you need to kill the pig. So from now on, unless its vegetable rennet I will be cheese free!

Wednesday and Friday I finally got to visit Linaria again. This place is amazing. They have so many projects going on all the time. Safe to say, Michaela my supervisor is definalty bussy! I was introduced to their project that they will be showcasing at an event in Milan, Italy in the month of May. I helped Linaria prep for this event by weaving reusable shopping bags that they will be handing out that are made from recycled material. Everyone at this site is so innovative. They are always thinking of new and different ways to use materials! Such as the material for the bags, it comes from the inside of a wall. Normally carpenters use it when building the foundation of a house, but not Linaria, they use it to reduce the plastic waste by creating a reusable shopping bag.
